Csesznek Castle (500 m)

Csesznek Castle (500 m)

The castle was built after the Tatar invasion, was transformed in the XV. century into a Gothic knight’s castle with multiple defensive lines and lived its heyday. It was occupied by the Kurucs during the Rákóczi War of Independence, and after it became the property of the Esterházys, it was transformed into a comfortable castle in baroque style, which was rendered uninhabitable at the beginning of the 19th century by an earthquake and then by a fire from a lightning strike.

The newly built, modern reception building houses the cash register and washbasins. From here, the huge ruins, built into the limestone rock, are a wonderful sight. On the way to the lower castle, we can learn about the history of the castle on information boards. First we reach the wide, flat area of the lower castle, from here we go up stairs between the walls that form the core of the castle and are best preserved, the upper castle. The view of the forests of Bakony, the village in the depths, is fantastic. Of particular interest is also the separate square tower, from the upper part of which wooden beams protrude like hedgehogs.
